Your Looks Are the Least Interesting Thing About You

At the beginning of the week, I woke up and looked like someone had decked me right in the face. My eye was completely swollen shut with pain as evidence telling me that something was wrong. A couple trips to the eye doctor later, and I was diagnosed with some random eye infection/ulcer/bacteria thing that required a prescription with a long 'medicial-ly' name to make it go away. Not only did it make me a little self conscious, but it was miserable.
Being a pirate has never been on my bucket list, but now that I am able to read my computer screen again, I am reflecting on the experience and chuckling.
I am only 21, but I am watching the girls around my age group become infatuated by the trend of "getting their lips done". Even though the thought of someone sticking a needle in the area that allows me to eat things like Mac 'N Cheese and miniature oreos scares me to death, a lot of girls are saddling up and getting it done.
Us girls also spend hours literally getting someone to sew fake hair into our head, glueing lashes on our eyelids and nails on our fingers, turning areas that were once an "A" into a "D" (and I'm not talking about grades), spending countless minutes contouring our chins with makeup (that was once made out of whale fat), and spending thousands of dollars on purses just because they have two letters that make it 'designer'. Seems silly right?

Before you attack me for wanting to 'better your image' or spruce things up for your new man, please hear me out. I understand that a lot of things that women do for their looks can be expressing creativity and having the ability to cover a pimple with concealer really is a blessing. I also know how to glue on a couple lashes if I (God bless) actually get a date. However, it is important to remember not to get caught up in it all...
Even if you are beautiful, your looks are the least interesting thing about you.
Hair colors, tanned skin, and outfits can all be imitated, but the characteristics that make you up are unique. What differentiates you from other people the most cannot be measured by money. Your brain power cannot be assisted by the length of your lashes and your soul cannot be shaped by the slimming dress you wear. Courage cannot be purchased, your testimony cannot be glued on, the experiences that you have conquered cannot be duplicated by someone else, no matter the price.
What if we all spent as much time working on our bravery and kindness as we did on our hair? What if we spent as much time caring for others as we do trying to keep up with the current trends? What if we worried more about how we treated people than how they look?
It is easy to lose sight of the things that are important by looking at only the things we can see.
Your looks are only compliments of what you hold inside.
Most importantly, the next time your confidence is feeling low or you catch yourself in comparison, remember that you are an 'exclusive, one-of-a-kind, designer brand' from the one above. The Lord designed your heart in His image and filled with His love..
Your heart is the most beautiful and interesting thing you have. Share it with others. Spend your time and energy working on that..
Isaiah 64:8 "But now, Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand."
