Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owens

Writer: HGHG

“I wadn't aware that words could hold so much. I didn't know a sentence could be so full.” ― Delia Owens

Synopsis by Author An unforgettable young woman, abandoned at age ten to survive alone in the wild coastal marsh of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her.

But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world–until the unthinkable happens.

Review 5.0/5.0 When I picked up Where the Crawdads Sing , I had no idea how much I would be drawn into the story. I have seen this book on reading lists for months, but figured it "was not my cup of tea". The author, Delia Owens, makes her debut as a novelist, previously a wildlife scientist.

Set in the 1950's/1960's, the story depicts a lovable main character who is unlike anyone I have read about. Even though it was not my usual piece of literature, it soon became one of my favorite pieces I have read.

The author uses descriptive language and an atmospheric tone that allows you to become completely engulfed with the nature in the story. The stunning portraits that she paints of the characters, Kya's home, and even small things such as fireflies, can almost take your breath away. I cannot remember the last time I stopped reading a story - and felt like I was still in it!

Where the Crawdads Sing completely draws you in.. and just when you think the story might be dragging, Owens sends you through another whirlwind of emotions.

And the ending?! My gosh, the ending..

An absolute beautiful piece of work... with a plot that never gets boring, characters you become emotionally invested in, and a glimpse into the world of Mother Nature, Where the Crawdads Sing, deserves no less than five stars.

Reminding me of classic pieces like To Kill a Mockingbird I know this will be a must-read for years to come..
